| 2010 Great Pyrenees Livestock Guard dogs |
Why did we choose Great Pyrenees over other breeds? The term 'Gentle Giants' is such a perfect way to describe them! We have quite a few farm visitors each year, and we didn't want a breed of dogs that would be unpredictable with our welcome company. We did, however, want a large breed that would be able to keep the coyotes and stray dogs from repeating the dog attack we had suffered earlier. There is nothing much more traumatic than finding your wonderful (and expensive) sheep literally torn to pieces. I just don't have the words to describe what that was like. I guess it's just one of those things you have to experience to really, fully understand. I've known others who raise sheep to sell out what they have left after dogs have destroyed their sheep...if there are any left to sell. I just wasn't willing to do that. Our sheep are our friends and the idea of letting them go to other homes was something I wasn't willing to consider. In March 2008, only a few weeks after dealing with the losses and horrible injuries of the dog attack, Sugar arrived at our farm. She was a perfect companion for our Pyr/Maremma guard dog, Baudelae. They really worked as a team right from the start and I knew I'd made the right decission. Sugar came with a secret...she soon gave us 5 perfect pups and we were in the business of providing livestock guard dogs for others. We kept one of the pups (Reilly)...we just couldn't resist! My children and I generally set up a booth in the sheep and wool tent at the Kentucky Sheep and Wool Festival in October. While we were there in October of 2008, my weakness for Pyrenees showed up! We ended up bringing home another Pyrenees, a female which we named Mauren. She was the same age as Reilly, but a little larger. Mauren fit in immediately and is now our field's ruler. She and Reilly seem to run things quite well. To make a long story short, we have a nice litter of pups available for sale now. They will learn their manners from our other adult dogs and will be trained to guard here on our farm before they leave. They were born on 5/26/10 and are quite plump and fine. ($600. each) If you are in a hurry and can't wait for pups to be trained, we have a working pair of 10 month old females. Although I would prefer to sell them as a working team, I will split them if a buyer wishes. Their names are Duchess and Willa. They are also Mauren and Reilly's. Born on 10/5/2009.
