5/26/10
Our new pups have arrived!
There were 6 perfect little
pups waiting with their
mother this morning when
we got to the barn. Please
let us know if you are
interesed in reserving one.
Great Pyrenees Livestock
Guardian Dogs
Although I do have a
'start' to this page, I
will be adding more
as time goes by.  All
the seasons for us, as
for most people, are
very busy and it does
not leave many
minutes to spare.
Please check back
often as I plan to
work on this page
soon!
As many of you may know, in February
2008 our farm was attacked by some
Boxers from a home several miles away.
It was one of the most traumatic events
we have had to go through with our
sheep.  We had  many severe injuries
and suffered our loses.  Although we
had one guard dog, and he
did keep our
losses low, he just couldn't keep several
large dogs from doing any damage at
all.  Without him, we would have
possibly lost our entire flock.
Since that night I have read some
articles on Livestock Guard Dogs that
point out the fact that one lone dog
simply can not be expected to fight off a
group of dogs or coyotes.  Infact, often
the dog will sacrifice his own life in an
effort to protect his flock.  Since I have
no intention of losing my dog or any
more sheep, in March I found a
wonderful female Great Pyrenees to
work with our Pyr/Maremma cross that
we already had.  We later added two
more young pyrenees pups who are
working out VERY well!
I can't say that I am not concerned
about the huge number of coyotes and
coys (coyote x dog) over the fence from
our sheep.  They were taking lambs from
our neighbors almost nightly last
summer.  The only reason I can think of
that we have not lost any sheep to
coyotes is our Livestock Guard Dogs.
We may get attacked tonight and lose
sheep, but so far our dogs have worked
well for us.  They certainly help me sleep
better when those coyotes howl and I
can hear our dogs warning them to
forget the idea of eating any of our
sheep!
