What on earth could one possibly want with a wether?

Wethers have a wonderful disposition, don't have a 'ram scent', and make
wonderful pets for children to learn to care for.  Rams should NEVER
be kept as pets.  Wethers are perfect for this purpose.

Spinners often don't want to deal with all that goes along with breeding
animals...they just want an available source of wonderful Icelandic wool in
their back yard to create with.  A wether, in many cases, is the perfect
answer for them!  Not only are they usually more friendly and gentle than
many breeding sheep, but in most cases their fleeces are softer than one
that is capable of breeding.

Since rams should be kept separate from the ewe flock for most of the
year, they need companionship.  Wethers make the ideal companion for a
ram.  They are not competition, so the ram should view a wether as a
friend rather than a rival.

If one is so inclined, a wether is a good addition to the table.  I almost
cringe to say that, but it is true.   They don't have any 'ram flavor' and
their meat is tender and mild.  I am not very tempted to eat my friends, so I
will probably only order my 'sheep meals' from other Icelandic breeders.
Maybe, someday, I will become more practical, but for today... I'm just not!

Friendly Guy has truly lived up to his name!
He is just a big baby, loves to have his ears
scratched, and comes over for attention just
about every time we go into the field.  He has
nice horns, a black fleece with some gray hairs
mixed in it, and will make a fantastic friend for
someone who needs a fiber animal or pet.  His
mother is Chocolate and his father is Troy.
We have kept Friendly Guy longer than we
had planned because of his sweet
disposition.  Friendly Guy was born in 2006.
Because of our pasture situation, we must
try to find a good home for him where there is
lots of love and grass!   He is an easy-keeper,
and has just been a joy to have around.

Nelson and Graham are fantastic
2007 wethers that have grown fast
and so beautiful.  Nelson is the white
one and Graham is the moorit.  They
both have soft, curly fleeces and
should be great for a fiber flock.
They are truly beautiful!

Nelson is reserved.              $175 each
Although Sophie's wether had one of
the most unusual patterns that I have
had on a lamb, he has turned to a
black/gray.  He is VERY sweet and
friendly so he would make a fantastic
pet in addition to a fiber sheep or
ram's companion.  One of my
daughters is very attached to him, but
realizes he must be finding a new home
soon.  He has nice, wide-set horns.

This is Clarisse's lamb, and he's just
HUGE!!  He is also very friendly
and sweet.  I am sure that he will make
a great fiber sheep or pet, in addition
to being a perfect friend to a ram.  He
is also a favorite around here just
because he is so terribly friendly.

Although this little guy is not 100% Icelandic, he
is just so beautiful that we know his fleece will be
worth having.  His mother is Molly, who is an
Icelandic/Suffolk cross.   This is another
example of the sheep thinking they knew more
about my breeding plan than I did.  When Levi
excaped to visit Matilda, he also decided that
Molly was supposed to be in his breeding
group.  We just love this one!  I think his fleece will
make excellent felt batts and quilt batts, in
addition to being nice to spin.  One of my
daughters is currently knitting a sweater from
one of Molly's lamb's fleeces.  It's just such a
soft, unique fleece and is turning out wonderfully
satiny.
This wether will be great for just about anything
you can think of, but he may not be as tasty on
the table as a 100% Icelandic would since he may
have a stronger 'muttony' flavor than Icelandics
are known for.
